On April 22 2023, we are hosting our very first Spring Music & Clean Up Event!

We’ve teamed up with a great local music artist to provide some tunes for guests after a day of cleaning up the creek & planting some new trees! We are SO excited to start this new tradition to kick off the warmer weather & camping season.

Last year we spent most of our time & energy on making the buildings @ HRF solid & stable for guests. We can now direct some of that energy toward the land - which needs a lot of work!

Our creek area just behind the bandstand is SO peaceful - but is filled with dumped logs, old barbed wire, tires, & lots of trash. We want this to be a space for guests to explore & enjoy so getting this area squared away & safe is really important to us.

This creek portion of our property is the last part of this water system before it connects to The Sac River just a few hundred feet down. Because our creek space is the last stop before hitting this major river, this area has gotten the rubbish from upstream properties & roads deposited into it & I think we can all agree that we need to keep this space clear for the entire health of the ecosystem & animal habitats it feeds into!

Planting The Food Forest

In the morning, we’ll begin with our planting of over 200 trees & bushes provided by the Missouri Dept. of Conservation. We have tons of pawpaws, pecans, blackberries, black cherries, hazelnuts, elderberries & more going into the ground to start building our "food forest”.

If you’ve never heard of a food forest, it’s a diverse planting of edible plants that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in nature. Quite the opposite of tidy garden beds! It’s a permaculture term that ensures a low-maintenance way of growing food & a great way to manage the natural water accumulation on the property. Come learn about our design process & help get them in the ground!

In the evening, we plan to offer BBQ foods for purchase as well as a complimentary concert with the local band Crossfire South! They will be playing an eclectic mix of covers inside the bandstand with plenty of space to lay out a few blankets or chairs on the lawn to enjoy the end of the day.
